Recognizing the importance of tourism for economic development, the National Tourism Administration of the People’s Republic of China and the Tonga Ministry of Tourism signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote tourism cooperation and expand tourism exchanges between the two countries.
Both countries have enjoyed a long standing friendship through many programs of cooperation, including education & training, culture, agriculture, construction, infrastructure and loans.
The MOU was signed on 3rd July 2015, in Nuku’alofa, by the Chairman of the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency, Mr. Li Jinzao and Tonga’s Minister for Infrastructure and Tourism, Hon. Etuate Sungalu Lavulavu in the presence of China’s Ambassador to Tonga, His Excellency, Mr. Huang Huaguang, and Tonga’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency, Brigadier General Tauaika Uta’atu. His Excellency, Mr. Li Jinzao was also in the Kingdom as the Special Envoy of the Chinese President for Their Majesties’ coronation.
The MOU commits both parties to work together towards a common goal – to recognize the importance of the Tourism Industry for the development of Tonga’s economy which would lead ultimately to opportunities for increased employment and improved services. The MOU also further enhances mutual understanding between the two countries and considers the importance of Tourism cooperation for bilateral relations.
During the bilateral meeting, H.E. Mr. Li Jinzao announced that in order to further promote the bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector; CNTA will introduce 100 Chinese travel agencies as well as 1000 visitors to visit Tonga in 2015.
According to the MOU, China and Tonga will conduct cooperation in areas of information sharing, marketing promotion, personnel training and other related activities. CNTA will also offer complimentary booths to Tonga for participating in the China International Travel Mart and facilitate the marketing activities of Tonga in China.
Tonga is committed through the Ministry of Tourism’s Corporate Plan for 2015/16 to 2018/19 to prepare a sound environment and an attractive investment package to encourage potential investors to invest in Tonga.
